Ben Tre to Can Tho (Meekong Delta 1) : On the 22nd of May, I left Ho Chi Minh City for the Meekong Delta provinces. On my first day I travelled with a German tourist called Janine. We took a small boat around the Ben Tre (sort of pronounced - Bhen Che) river area of the tourism precinct. Later that night I was driven to Can Tho (pronounced - Ghang Tah!)where I spent another 3 or 4 days checking out the capital of the region. There is a lot to do and see down this way. This is part one of of my images from the Meekong, I have even more from Vanh Long, a small rural area out of town.

I went to Can Tho to see the floating markets, and they were great, but not quite the idyllic image I had in mind of green grass and river canoes paddled by wise-faced little ladies. Rather it was a system of boats meeting on the river, tin housing crushing the water's edge and loud truck motors bopping through the otherwise relative quiet. An hour or so up river things became far more peaceful. Less boats, jungle and banana trees hugging the shore with the occaisional rice paddy visible from the boat. I saw young children splashing around and mothers do their washing, kitchen and clothing in the Meekong's murky waters. These were remarkably hard to get as my boat passed by. Later I learnt that my boat driver would've stopped if I asked!

I also found out after asking to visit a farm or someones house, that 'homestay' in Vietnam is another name for guesthouse, which is really a small private hotel, so my hopes of staying on a farm for a day or two were not to be.

Before I left Can Tho, I also took a day out on the opposite side of the main river and went to the fish markets. I was told there would be a lot of children there, and I think I ended up seeing more kids than adults, it was great shooting.

Vietnam - Hochi Minh City B : These images are from the greater Ho Chi Minh City area as well as near my guesthouse again. A large number of the photos taken were from the back pillion of a motorbike with my non-english speaking guide. I tapped his shoulder and pointed to communicate. He also knew the words stop and hello, helpful in these situations. No seriously, considering that, he did a fantastic job and was very patient with my demands.

The ride took in The Expat District, as well as a new development area and some of the poorer suburbs too. There is a fair amount of contrast as is to be expected.

Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh City A : So this is Hochi Minh City, from the suburbs near the airport to the city centre itself. The streets are abustle with motorbikes, they flow through the veins of Vietnam's largest city in some sort of organized chaos. Just crossing a street for the first time is a nerve wracking experience: walk slowly and watch as everyone slips around you or brakes at the last minute.

On the street, most people are very approachable and friendly, although this is not refelcted anywhere near as much in the city centre where hawkers try to flog off items that you don't need or want. I did spend some money with one lady who didn't try to hassle me after I snuck a few shots of her.

I've made friends with a few of the locals, meeting them at dinner or on the street. If one thing is a constant around the world, it is the love of beer, where in Ho Chi Minh it is no different to Cairns.

The streets are deceptive, where it looks like a street is just a series of tired old shops, you will find quite audacious wedding shops, pubs full of pool tables and the occaisional shopping centre which once inside, looks just like one from home.

Daram Shala/Mcleod Ganj : Imagine yourself arriving in this little, cold, dusty town in the mountains. Tibetans walk the uneven roads and beggars call from the street corners. Yea, India with a twist, right? No. Italian restuarants and tibetan cafes outnumber Indian restuarants 10 to 1. Mini-movie theatres play all the latest pirated movies and people gather around chai (indian tea) stands playing music and laughing. Good-bye India, hello Fantasy Land. People stay here weeks, even months. A delicate indian and tibetan west that is disparate to the greater India. It's hard to leave, and equally, hard to get to. Welcome to McLeod Ganj, home of the Dalilama.

Shimla : 2.2km up in the early Himilayas, Shimla is the former summer capital of British India. It is green, pristine and clean. The people up here are also a little more 'sophisticated' than your average Indian, spending a lot of time in cafes. The dress style up here is the most liberal I have seen so far in India. Women are commonly seen on the street, totally opposite of what I have seen in most of Rajistan or even Delhi.

Jaipur: Elephant Festival : The Elephant festival happens every year in Jaipur the day before Holi Day. Celebrations occur in a small stadium where locals perform ritual dances and sing. Elephants are then paraded, followed by a stumpingly fast game of elephant polo. At the end, tourists jump up on the elephants and throw coloured powder at each other and on the crowd.

Pushkar : Pushkar is a small holy town, cradled by mountains, holy men and eager tourist vendors. Within itself, Pushkar is a juxtaposition of life styles. Holiness and drugs: dedication and shanti-ism. Many travellers pass through Pushkar, and many more stay. Called Shanti's by many Indians, they are often Israeli's who wish to take it easy. (Shanti - the hebrew word for peaceful and easy). I found myself approached a couple of times asked if I wanted to buy any drugs, as if buy virtue I had come to Pushkar for that very reason. Beyond the drugs, Pushkar has a pulsing hippy undercurrent that has that oh-so familiar feeling. Cafe hangouts and rastifarian music in beach-like restaurants on roof tops, all incongruinous to the indiginous population. I could've been in Kuranda or Byron Bay back home in Australia, the atmosphere was so strong. I eventually returned to Pushkar with a German student Annika (a cimber), and we trudged up the mountain nearest to our hotel, to capture a glimpse of rugged mountains with their backs broken upon endless kilometres of desert and rock.

Jodhpur: Merangarth Fort : This was the home of the Maharaja until about 50 years ago. This fort was never taken in it's entire history. What's more special about this fort is that the Maharaja who constructed it disposessed a man who lived upon the hill, resulting in a curse being laid upon it. During it's construction, a man volunteered to be buried within it's mortar alive, to appease the curse and allow the Maharaja to prosper...

Mandawa : One of the smaller stops I had in Rajistan, Mandawa was a sleeper. Beautiful little streets and traditional weathered buildings rich in history, it's quiet roads snuck into the past. Upon reaching the hotel, a small but viscid storm passed over. After the storm, my tour guide arrived, a 14 year old boy with greying hair. As we walked the sodden streets of Mandawa, he crooned love songs to me in his best voice while constantly asking me if he was doing a good job. The many places we visited were the actual homes of the local people, who live directly off the profits they make from people like me coming to their houses. They are literally living museums grasping into their past.

On the Road to Mandawa : The highways of India are busy, crazy and they work. Cars with one passenger, auto-rickshaws with a family of eight, tractors with people clinging onto whatever they can hold. Horns become sonar: I'm here, I'm there, Don't hit me, I'm close, move over. Drivers generally stick to the left, but that's a generalisation. Some prefer the middle, and others the right. Familys in small villages erect random speed bumps that cause crashes in the night and countless children and families live on the cloying dirt that meets the tarmac.

As they'd say in India, he is "achcha aardmi hai" - or "a good man". He took me for a motorbike ride and a walk through the local shops. We rented out a VCD, with a toss up between "Pirates of the Carribean" in hindi and "X-Men 2" in english. "Pirates" won. Western movies are popular in his household, but many Indians frown down upon them as filth.

Piles of rubble line the streets waiting for someone to steal their contents and friendly vendors and rickshaw drivers (in albiet at times dirty but repsectable western dress) would say hello with a gaping smile.
